life drawing in perth

Long time coming!

Greetings all,

Terribly sorry about my lack of updates over the last few months. Life has been crazy busy, and sadly life drawing has started to fall to the wayside for me.

But now for an update!

The Sunday sessions at Atwell have had a bit of a quite period of late, but they are continuing their format of having two models. One for long loses, the other for shorter ones.

The Monday night sessions in Shenton Park are going strong. And Nic who runs it was just informed that the rent she is paying to the Victoria League this month is going towards aiding a homeless man aquire clothing and food. That is certainly one way to make you feel better about drawing! There is no session this coming Monday due to the public holiday, but their line up of models for October is –

  • 3rd Alex
  • 10th Hayley
  • 17th Stacey
  • 24th Deb
  • 31st Kieran

Alex, Stacey and Deb are all new names to me, but Kieran is a classic and always great fun to draw, and Hayley is one of my favourite models on the circuit due to the really great poses she uses, so this should be a great month to get out there and give drawing a go (I too will be endeavouring to due so as I miss it far too much).

Cheers

A model update and yet another holiday?

Greetings all,
Just a quick note for the weekend that our session on Monday will now be a clothed model session (our first for the year) with Jane, as our pervious model had to unfortunately cancel. I’m not sure what outfit Jane will be wearing this time, but given her previous outfits (jungle girl, steam punk, burlesque and 1960s stewardess) I’m quite sure she won’t disappoint.

The following Monday (the 20th) will be a male/female session with Kieran and Leah.

And lastly, there will be no session on the 27th due to ANZAC day. Which from our perspective unfortunately makes April quite a short month.

Cheerio all!

The new format and a model update

Greetings everyone,
We had a cracking first double model session with Kieran and Amy last week.

The double session last week also means that we will beginning our new regular rotation from next week which is: 4 weeks of single model sessions (female/male/female/male), 1 clothed model session, 1 double model session, then we start over again. To help everyone keep track of the dates, the next double session is on May 5th (it’s seven weeks away as April 21st is a holiday)

If the numbers stay similar to what we have been having lately, I will also be looking into arranging the odd double session (which I would let everyone know about beforehand), and if I do it would be during the second female session.

The new rotation also means that the rate will be going up to $15 a session from the 24th, (for which we will be having Lucy in as our model for the evening, followed by David, a new model to Perth, the following week) but every sixth session you attend will be free.

I’ve also updated some of the info on the site here as well including amendments to Friday and Sunday sessions, a newish Thursday session and new instructed sessions being taught by one of our former models, Kiah.

Cheers all,
– Christopher

A UWA model update and loads of info

Greetings all,
We had an absolutely massive turnout last week which was just crazy. I think I can safely say that 30 people is the the breaking point for our humble little room. But think you everyone who came out, I will try a modified layout on Monday to see if I can make things more comfortable (say by removing some of the tables and such).

The next model
This coming Monday we continue the newness of the year by having in yet another new model for us, Joel. I am quite interested in seeing what he looks like as apparently his upper body physique is so impressive that he was described as looking like Captain America. So this ought to be good.

No session
After that, there will be no session on March 3rd due to the public holiday.

Clothed model
When we come back on March 10th, we will have the first of what will be a regularly occurring event for us, a clothed model. In this case one of our regular models, Jane, will be dressed in her finest cabaret outfit for us. The time format for these nights may shift slightly based on the model/clothing.

Double session
And then after that on March 17th, another new regular event for us will be starting with us having two models in at the same time. For our first double-night we’ll be having Kieran and Amy in for the night. This will be really exciting as it will allow us to have have both short and long poses going on at the same time where one model is still for 20 minutes while the other goes through 5 and 10 minute poses. This is something I have wanted to do for a while so I am quite excited to finally get this off of the ground.

Weekly format
After this, we’ll be going to our new six week rotation of having four regular model sessions, a clothed session and then a double session.

Lighting
I am also looking into getting some proper lighting for the room. Those of you who joined the group last year wouldn’t know what I’m talking about, but those from before then may remember the nice bright spotlights we used to have. Unfortunately, they were really bright, and once we changed the layout of the room to have the model in the centre of the room there was no where to position them that wouldn’t blind an entire row of people trying to draw. So now I am looking into getting some professional spotlights that I could possibly hang from the ceiling for our sessions. I’ve only just started looking, but if any of you have photo or artwork hanging experience and can help point me in the right direction that would be great.

The dropping of the other boot
All of this does come with a drawback though, and that is that from March 24th (the new model cycle), the session rate will be going up to $15. I will be giving out a stamp cards though and you’ll get a stamp for every session you come to with the sixth one being free. Which means that if you come out regularly the double model session won’t cost you a thing, and means that if you average the cost over the six sessions the rate is actually $12.50.
This is due to factors such as the fact the hourly rate I pay models has gone up over the years whereas I’ve been charging the same amount. It also helps to create a buffer for when we have slower nights, which inevitably happens over the winter months where we go down to nights with a few as 6-8 people. The buffer will also assist with refreshments for our annual exhibition.

If anybody does have any questions about anything in this email, please feel free to email me or just ask me in the weekly session.

Oh yeah, one other thing, if any of you are looking for drawing supplies, there is a new supplier in town (though their main thing seems to be catering to Uni students, they do deliver to everybody). Feel free to check them out: http://www.facebook.com/penandincbureau

Cheers

A model update and shows!

Greetings all,

Our great turnout has been continuing, which is good as we head towards the final stretch of the year.

Tomorrow night (the 4th) we’ll be having ChloĆ© as our model, and the following week (the 11th) we’ll be having Kieran in. During the session with Kieran we’ll be trying something a bit different during the longer poses: over the semester that had just finished we had Kieran as one of our models for the drawing unit, and in one of the weeks we were projecting images on to his body (such as animal textures and a skeleton). This produced some fantastic imagery to draw and I think it’ll be fun to give it a go. If everyone enjoys it, I’ll do the same thing with Jane when we have her in at the beginning of December (as she was one of the other models we had in for the classes).

And in other news, if any of you are wondering what to do after you Cup festivities have finished on Tuesday, why not swing by the Cullity Gallery (the one next to our drawing room) and come on out to have a look at the Honours Exhibition and have a drink? It’s actually comprises two bodies of work by myself and my fellow Honours student (and some-time drawing participant) Valdene. Tuesday night from 6-8 and the show comes down the next day. The invite is below:

And in regards to shows and our drawing group, I have booked out the Cullity for us to do another drawing exhibition this year. It’ll be for one weekend only, setup is December 18th-19th, we’ll have a drinks night on the 20th, the show will run over the weekend and people can take down their works Sunday evening or on Monday. Same rules as last time: life drawing work only, and you’d have to been out to at least one of our sessions this year (and the drawings are not limited solely to ones done in our group).
So let me know if you want in as it is open to all!

Happy drawing everybody!
– Christopher

Some model info and a downpour of images

We’ve been having some great weeks lately, with the night we had Sophie in having a record 30 people in, which I will officially put as the breaking point for the room.

Next week, the 20th, we’ll be having Maria in who is new to the Perth scene , and then Kieran on the 27th. And now for some pictures!

No regular session and an awesome outdoor one

Greetings all,
We’ve had a great session this week (which I wasn’t sure would happen due to the weather) with Kieran, so thank you everyone for coming out (especially to all the new faces)!
There will be no session on April 1st due to the holiday.Ā When we come back on the 8th we’ll have Victoria in for which will be only the second time we’ve been able to have her in in a year. So that’s great.
For those of you needing your drawing fix on Monday night (the 1st), Dr. Sketchy’s is doing a special outdoor drawing event in Northbridge (and another one on the 15th). I’ve copied the details below, or you can check out the site here.

Date: 01 Apr 13
Start: 6:30PM
Dr Sketchy’s Anti Art School Perth brings you two nights of freedom in the Piazza!
That’s right, Dr Sketchy’s is completely free to the public this month in the Northbridge Piazza where you can lay on the decadent grass under the big screen and sketch as some of the more fantastical propwork, sets and costumed life models are displayed for your sketching pleasure! Life Modelling by stunning Burlesque queens and circus performers. The most beautiful and bizarre come out for the purpose of furthering your art work.
Bring along your sketchpad and whatever medium you fancy. Easels are welcome up the back and bring a drop sheet if you intend on doing some flamboyant paint work. Games, prizes, daring performances and our host the Insane German Scientist, Dr Barry Umenema will have you laughing through the evening! Life drawing just got a whole lot more interesting!
Come one, come all – open to artists and beginners alike. Talent welcome, but not at all necessary, just BYO art supplies!

Whoops!

Sorry everyone, just realised that I haven’t updated in awhile.

Tonight (the 18th), we’ll be having Jane as our model. Next week (the 25th), Kieran will be in.

Also, just of note, there will be no session on April 1st as it is another holiday.

Cheerio!

That’s it for the year (and the last picture to be uploaded for the year too)!

Greetings folks,

Just want to say thanks to everyone who kept on coming out to the UWA sessions on Monday nights. We had our (rather packed) last session for the year last week.

We’ll be back on 4 February 2-13 at the same time.

Below are images from when we had in Victoria, Kieran and Xiu Lei:
